A mobile application that uses artificial intelligence, typically a large language model, to generate conversational partners or simulate romantic interaction with users. These apps generally create synthetic characters rather than connecting two real people.
AI dating apps occupy a crowded and fast-moving corner of the consumer chatbot market, and coverage of them tends to blur the line between companionship tools and actual dating platforms. Knowing which one you are looking at matters, since the mechanics, expectations, and privacy implications differ sharply between a synthetic chat partner and a service built around real people.
Also called: AI companion app, AI girlfriend app, AI boyfriend app, chatbot dating app, synthetic companion platform
