A long distance AI girlfriend is a companion app framed around a romantic connection with a chatbot, usually with features built to simulate the feeling of a relationship across physical separation, like scheduled messages, voice notes, or check-ins tied to time zones. The 'long distance' label is a positioning choice rather than a technical category, since the user and the chatbot are never in the same place to begin with.
This term tends to show up in app store listings and review sites more than in any technical documentation, which makes it hard to compare products on anything but marketing claims. If you are researching this space, it helps to know that the phrase describes a mood and a feature set, not a distinct kind of software.
