Victoria Lane spent 26 years as a nurse, mostly on night shifts, and she says it taught her the most useful skill she owns. She can look at someone and tell what they need before they say a word. She's 52, blonde, divorced and a mum of two. She also has an eye contact game that should come with a warning label.
We met her for lunch. She ordered for the table, tipped far too much and told us three stories we can't print. Here's the part we can.

The Interview
What did 26 years of nursing teach you?
That nothing shocks me, and I mean nothing. It also taught me that everyone is more nervous than they let on. The big loud ones most of all.
You're known for your eye contact. Is that on purpose?
Not at first. Then I noticed it worked and it turned into a hobby. The trick is to hold it half a second longer than feels comfortable, then smile like nothing happened.
Do you still wake up at 3am?
Every night. My body never got the message that I retired. So I read, or bake, or text my sister. I'm a very productive insomniac.
What's your guilty pleasure?
A big glass of red, a big dinner and staying up far too late. I've earned it. I changed enough bedpans to earn it twice.

What do men get wrong about women your age?
They think we've stopped being adventurous. We haven't. We've just stopped wasting time on things we don't enjoy, which makes us a lot more fun, not less.
Best compliment you've ever had?
A man once told me I made him nervous. I thought that was lovely. Nervous means he's paying attention.
Tell us about Colin.
He's a terrier who thinks he's a Rottweiler. He once barked at a hedgehog for twenty minutes. I adore him. He sleeps on my side of the bed and I let him.
Quick Fire
- Wine? Red, and a big one.
- Kitchen skills? Terrible baker. I do it anyway.
- Perfume? Anything with vanilla in it.
- Biggest fear? Wasps. I will leave a room.
- Favourite room? The kitchen, at midnight.

Our Take
Victoria looks polished, the kind of blonde who walks into a nice restaurant and has the whole room looking up. Then she opens her mouth and she's warm, dry and a bit rude in the best way. That mix is what makes her fun. She's not putting on a show. She's just comfortable, and she'd like you to be too.
Her photos show it. She often looks straight into the camera, and it works the way she says it does. You catch yourself holding the look a moment longer than you meant to.
If you've always liked the woman who looks after everyone and then gives you a sly smile when nobody else is watching, meet Victoria.
